The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
