Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations show the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important official stated the vandalism left him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
