EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
